Welcome to the Starzomski Lab website!
We are community ecologists studying biodiversity, based in the School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria. Where species are, why they are there, and where they might go are all questions we are interested in. Our focus is often on island biogeography, marine terrestrial subsidies, long-term human impacts on the environment, habitat loss and landscape change, and using community science to better understand biodiversity. We’re especially interested in combining experimental, observational, and theoretical methods to answer our most pressing ecological questions. For more on our research, see the Research & Publications page.
Another thing that we do is biodiversity surveys reported through iNaturalist. Below are some research field photos and some of the “greatest hits” observations from the BC Biodiversity Program. Many of these observations are rare or at risk species, new records for BC, new to science, or just plain cool! Clicking the photo will open a new tab to the original iNat observation, iNat project, or research paper.
